Guilty of neglecting your hair during lockdown? Gone to sleep with your hair wet? Or maybe you've abandoned your hair washing routine completely? As tempting as it might be to spend less time on your hair care, it can actually have detrimental effects to your hair's health. Here are our simple top tips for looking after your hair during lockdown and keeping those spilt ends at bay until you can get to the salon.

1. Use less heat

It’s the perfect time for using less heat on your hair, with many of us opting for updos or embracing our natural locks. But if you do fancy styling your hair for your next zoom meeting at work, you should opt for a hair tool that will protect your hair from heat damage.

DAFNI Allure

The DAFNI Allure is a hot styling brush which straightens hair in less than 5 minutes. Operating at the optimum temperature of 185°C, this hot brush maintains a constant heat through its large surface area, delivering a steady temperature across the hair shaft, meaning less heat and less damage caused to your hair.

Plus it’s also a great tool for using after the isolation period too, think about how much time you'll shave off your morning routine when you can achieve perfectly straightened hair in just 3-5 minutes.

2. Opt for tourmaline technology

If you do prefer a traditional flat iron for straightening your hair, choose a pair of straighteners with Tourmaline technology. This can help to protect your hair whilst also helping you to achieve a sleek, smooth and static-free finish.

Tourmaline is a crystal that is ground into dust and embedded into the heat plates of straighteners. The crystal works by emitting negative ions, which counteract with the positive ions that are often found in dry or damaged hair. The tourmaline helps to seal moisture into the hair as you straighten it, preventing frizz and damage. When tourmaline is placed in ceramic plates, the straighteners are able to effortlessly glide over the hair as you style it. This prevents you from needing to make multiple passes over the same area, which can cause additional heat damage and weaken hair.

We Are Paradoxx Supernova 3-in-1 Hair Tool

The We Are Paradoxx Supernova 3-in-1 Hair Tool is a revolutionary device that can straighten, curl and wave. Boasting the latest cutting-edge technology and ceramic tourmaline plates, the tool glides over your hair and prevents heat damage. You can switch between the 3 styling modes with the smart switch feature, plus with full-sized plates you don't need to compromise on quality or performance.

T3 Singlepass LUXE Straightener & Styling Wand

Or you can opt for a hair styling tool like the T3 Singlepass LUXE Straightener & Styling Wand. It uses the same ceramic tourmaline technology to maintain healthy hair as well as give you long-lasting results. Coupled with it's StyleEdge design, the bevelled edges mean that hair won't get caught as you straigthen either.

3. Brush your hair

Now this one might seem really simple, but now we’re all staying inside you might be tempted to skip brushing your hair. Brushing your hair has great benefits for your hair and scalp, it helps to distribute oils from your roots (which don’t usually need it), to the ends of your hair (which will be grateful for the extra moisture). If you’re not brushing your hair you could be finding your roots are getting greasier quicker and when there’s excessive build-up on your scalp, this can lead to more problems such as dandruff.

If your hair usually tangles or knots easily, then you can expect this to happen more often if you’re not brushing your hair. Trying to then untangle these later on can cause breakages and weaken your hair.

T3 Smooth Paddle Brush

We’d recommend brushing your hair at least once a day, but most people will find they’ll need to brush once in the morning and then again in the evening before bed too. You may need to adjust the amount of times you brush your hair depending on your hair type, length and if you have any hair or scalp conditions. The T3 Smooth Paddle Brush is gentle enough to be used on dry or wet hair, plus the nylon bristles allow you do glide through and easily detangle hair.

4. Treat your scalp

An area which is often completely overlooked during your hair regimen, but is essential for keeping your hair healthy. We recommend an invigorating scalp massage, which can do wonders for your hair and your mind too. Your circulation and blood flow is increased during the massage which delivers oxygen and essential nutrients to your scalp, rejuvenating the skin, encouraging the production of hair follicles and in turn accelerating the growth of healthy hair.

Scalp massages are also great for removing any dead skin cells on the scalp. Oil and product build-up can cause flaky skin and an irritated scalp. A scalp massage helps to buff any of this excess build-up away that hasn’t been removed from washing.

An added benefit of scalp massages are that they can significantly boost your mood. They increase the production of serotonin, the chemical in the body that contributes to your wellbeing and happiness. This lifts your energy levels and helps to alleviate your mind of any stress and tension.

Hayo’u Beauty Restorer Comb

You can use a tool like the Hayo’u Beauty Restorer Comb to complete a quick, rejuvenating scalp massage each day. Inspired by age-old Chinese medicine practices, the comb is made from 100% Xiuyan Jade stone and is super easy to use. Just work the comb from the front of your head to the nape of your neck in short motions and then repeat all over your scalp. Taking just a few minutes each day to complete this ritual will be sure to leave you feeling de-stressed and will promote healthy hair growth.

5. Eat a healthy diet

The condition of your hair is a result of your inside health and requires many essential nutrients to maintain strong and shiny locks.

Protein is crucial for strong, healthy hair. As our hair is made of protein it can become brittle and weak without enough protein in your diet. Good sources of protein are chicken, turkey, fish, fish, dairy products and eggs, with legumes and nuts also a great vegetarian option.

Your intake of Iron plays an important role in hair growth, as the hair follicle and root are fed by a nutrient rich blood supply. Too little iron can disrupt the nutrient supply, affecting the hair growth cycle. You can find iron in red meat, chicken, fish, lentils, spinach and other leafy green vegetables like broccoli and kale.

Vitamin C helps to increase the absorption of iron, eating foods such as kiwis, oranges, strawberries and blueberries will contribute to this. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant and can stimulate the production of collagen which strengthens the capillaries that supply the hair shafts.

Vitamin A aids the creation of sebum, which provides natural conditioning properties to the scalp and nourishes hair. Vitamin A can be found in orange and yellow coloured vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes and pumpkins.

Protect your scalp with minerals Zinc and Selenium by consuming fortified cereals, wholegrains, oysters beef and eggs. Biotion-rich foods like wholegrains, egg yolk, soy flour and yeast can help to strengthen brittle hair and encourage hair growth too.
