We’ve all heard of acne, but what actually is it? What are the causes? And what are the best technologies to treat it? We investigate…

What is acne?

Acne or ‘common acne’ as it is sometimes known is a condition that affects most people at some point in their life.

Whilst many people suffer from acne in their teenage years, 20% of cases actually occur in adults.

Acne mainly occurs on the face, back and chest and causes red spots, oily skin and can be painful to touch if it’s particularly aggressive.

What causes acne?

Acne is caused when tiny holes, known as your sebaceous glands, become blocked.

These are the glands attached to hair follicles and are responsible for moistening the skin and hair with an oily substance called sebum. When someone is suffering from acne, their sebaceous glands are working in overdrive and are producing too much sebum.

This then mixes with dead skin cells, oil, dirt or access makeup that is left on the skin and forms a ‘plug’ which blocks the follicle, causing a spot to appear.

External lifestyle factors such as stress, can aggravate acne but are not the root cause of it.

What’s the best technology to treat acne?

Blue Light Therapy is a really effective technology for treating acne at home.

The frequency of the blue light kills the bacteria that causes acne, without the rough side effects that may come with using anti-acne ingredients like peroxide and retinol.

Blue Light Therapy works below the surface of the skin to target bacteria. It essentially ‘tricks’ the bacteria into self-destructing, meaning you can use it both as a preventative measure or to catch the breakouts as soon as they come up.

Our product expert says…

“Acne is something which can affect confidence and is really hard to control - with added media pressure everyone wants perfect skin too.

“I’ve struggled with acne since I was 15, I’ve tried every antibiotic and cream under the sun and I’ve found what works best for me is Blue Light therapy.

“The Quasar MD Blue has been my hero over the last few years and has helped me get my skin under control and looking picture perfect.”
